SMS to serve and protect WA disabled

West Australians with speech and hearing disabilities can now call on police for help using an SMS text messaging service.

West Australia Police claimed that the service, SMSAssist, launched at its Midland Communications Centre, is the first of its kind in the country.

According to research obtained by WA Police, SMS has become a popular way for individuals with speech and hearing disabilities to overcome difficulties communicating with relatives and friends.

The technology behind SMSAssist was developed by Amnet in partnership with Optus.

"Because the level of mobile phone ownership amongst this community is so high, the WA Police Service is providing a resource for these people to be able to contact police services via SMS," said Ament in statement released to Australian Stock Exchange.

Amnet intends to promote the service to Police Services in other states.
