In 1998 Qantas outsourced its telecommunications network to Sita in a $90M, six-year deal. This week both parties announced that the system was operational.

Called QIPNet, it uses a number of comms technologies including IP, carrying phone and data for its admin, travel, reservations and airport facilities around the world. There are currently 1280 connected workstations at 56 sites in 30 countries.

Qantas general manager for corporate services David Burden said that performance, cost effectiveness and security were all key factors in implementing the network.

-QIPNet is central to our strategy of introducing more innovative services to meet the needs of customers, staff and suppliers well into the 21st century.

SITA was formed by the airline industry more than 50 years ago. Qantas has been a member since 1956. It services all the major world airlines as well as airports, travel companies, air freighters, manufacturers and reservation systems operators. It recorded revenues of over US$1.2B in 1998. www.sita.int
