Privacy Commissioner investigates Government spam

The Federal Privacy Commissioner has launched an investigation into the recent reports of a government Web site spamming users.

The investigation is expected to take between four weeks and several months, depending on circumstances, a spokesperson for the Federal Privacy Commissioner told ZDNet Australia.

-All government agencies are required to comply with the Privacy Act and the Federal Privacy Commissioners guidelines," he said. He stressed that the investigation is not a witch-hunt.

-It's about addressing the issues and finding solutions to the problem," he said.

Shadow Minister for IT Kate Lundy welcomed the investigation, saying that it indicated the seriousness of the issue raised. She also took the opportunity to berate Senator Alston, the minister for IT, over his inaction.

-There's a lot the Government could do to take the initiative," she said. -It's about having clear policy objectives and giving clear advice to departments on these matters."

as if the government wants to stop spam....r u crazy? the only real free speech uncensored medium left in the world is the internet. while real spam is an issue the side effect (funny that) is free speech to the masses filtered by software intended to remove spam. if i were an antivirus company and the books looked a little light i might just create a problem???? if i were a government worried about the lack of control on the internet i might create a problem......this spam issue has been going on too long now - government has not done jack!! why?? cause one man with information, a high speed internet connection, mailing list and mail server can do real damage in minutes and reverse years of government propaganda....thats why.

    sheeple or people
