Primus Telecom Australia has its sights set on a market of half the Australian population with the initial deployment of new digital subscriber line (DSL) network infrastructure.
The telecommunications company said it had invested more than AU$300 million since 1996 in building its own high-capacity network as an alternative to Telstra. It is presently upgrading almost 200 telephony exchanges with digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs), with another 100 due for work over the next 12 months.
Primus Telecom's managing director Greg Wilson said "It is the first time that standard fixed line telephony on a major scale has been offered other than on the Telstra-owned network or over cable... Now we will be able to provide voice and broadband services to a significant number of residential customers. This DSL network deployment will... provide Primus the ability to manage the introduction and delivery of innovative services," said Wilson.
Primus said the upgrade would accommodate the latest broadband technologies, including ADSL2+, At speeds of up to 24mbps, ADSL2+ is expected to deliver a diverse range of voice, data and interactive services -- including video on demand.
"This initiative represents the next logical phase in Primus's evolving business strategy in Australia," said Wilson.
I live in Canberra and Telsta has told me that my line is too bad for adsl. They still charge me the same as if i had a decent line. The sooner Telstra goes down the gurgler and some real companies take over the better.
