People Telecom in AU$500k network upgrade

Business-focused telco People Telecom has flagged plans to spend around AU$500k upgrading its broadband network with new Internet aggregation hardware.

"People Telecom has reached agreement with Ericsson's Redback Networks to acquire SmartEdge Internet aggregation equipment that will add to the quality of service for its existing broadband customers and enhance the scalability of the network to meet new demand," the telco said in a statement this morning.

SmartEdge is a class of routers that aggregates and manages broadband subscribers over different network infrastructures such as ATM and Ethernet. The machines are deployed at the edge of telcos' networks, linking customers back to much larger core network links.

The Redback kit was selected after an "extensive evaluation process", according to People Telecom. A spokesperson for the telco told ZDNet Australia the deal was worth around AU$500,000 in total.

The telco's chief executive John Stanton said the new hardware was needed due to the boom in broadband. He said installation would start immediately, with People Telecom to soon launch a new suite of both business and consumer-grade services.

And this is news how .....? Anonymous -- 13/02/07

    A 500k spend ?...pfffftttttt.............

I work in the public sector for a major department and we'd drop 500k on a single VOIP router.

We'd lose 500k down the side of the couch.
I know this is probably a big deal for John Stanton but seriously.....

    What next ? ??

    hehe thanks for your comments!

I admit this isn't the hugest news story that I've ever written :) But People Telecom is one of the larger second-tier telcos, so we cover stuff like this that they do. I admit it's not in the range of the $1 billion deals Optus and Telstra tend to announce!

But, sirrah, I cry fowl on your $500k behind the couch claim. I monitor the public sector pretty closely and rarely see large telecommunications deals of the $500k "behind the couch" level that you're claiming :) If they're out there, let me know :) I will be happy to cover them.

Renai, how can you possibly say that? Anonymous -- 14/02/07 (in reply to #320074581)

A 500k deal isn't even a blip on the radar for a major gov dept. I mean, we'd spend that much on a cabling contractor for ONE site, let alone the 4-5 we have in the pipeline now.

Serious mate, I'm having difficulty digesting what you just said. It's like saying that a car dealership sold some added floormats with their latest deal....I mean, it's a non event. Think about it, you have departments that need to burn 60-100 Million $ before EOFY, a 500k spend on some kit or some software or something wouldn't even rate a footnote in a margin somewhere.

Look at Defence or Immigration or Centrelink..... they have multi BILLION dollar budgets, nothing in the private sector even comes close. Geez..we have multi billion dollar helicopters that can't even fly! Who gives a rats about a piddly 3 million dollar VOIP rollout somewhere ?

Just saying it like it is. Go read Estimates Hansard sometime.....you'll see.

    cheers!
