Stanton said that his move was prompted by the recent takeover bid by M2 telecommunications. "It's a logical move. The merged entity would only need one CEO and that will be Vaughan Bowen," he told ZDNet.com.au.

The deal was moving well, according to Stanton, and should be wrapped up by March. He intended to leave People Telecom some time in the first quarter, but hadn't yet set where he would be moving. "I'm looking at a couple of different things right now," he said.

Before his appointment as People Telecom CEO in 2006, Stanton held senior positions in UK satellite company Intelsat as well as various roles at Telstra and its predecessor OTC.
