Pacific Internet is targeting the business side of broadband, and is hoping that its one point-of-contact offering and a single bill in one currency will appeal to businesses with offices in different countries.
In addition to Malaysia, Pacific Internet has offices in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, India and Thailand.
-To give a value added Internet service to the business market you need to have a network of countries serviced by one ISP," Dennis Muscat, managing director of Pacific Internet Australia told ZDNet Australia.
The company will not be offering consumer broadband in Malaysia, instead offering the business market leased line, integrated services digital network (ISDN), virtual private network (VPN), roaming, e-mail, outsourcing and hosting services, according to a statement.
-We are specialising in providing businesses with inter-country service," said Muscat. -We are targeting multinationals by definition, but multinational doesn't need to mean huge companies."
Muscat pointed out that Malaysia has 500,000 registered businesses, most of them small, and Australia has 600,000 SMEs. There is a lot of overlap, according to Muscat, and Pacific Internet is targeting the portion of those businesses that have overseas offices, or have a business relationship with an overseas company.
-We're opening up a lot of customers just out of Sydney," said Muscat. -It's early stages but it will really flourish over the next two to three years." The company has no set plans for further expansion, but will likely move into southern China from Hong Kong, according to Muscat.
-We want to be an ISP that can service business customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The logical conclusion of that is more points of presence and more products moving around," he said.
