The service is aimed at retail businesses with a number of locations which need to connect their offices, but don't require Internet access at each location. Pacific Internet assigns each business a private part of the ISPs network over which they can send unlimited data, but doesn't guarantee a grade of service.
"It's going away from the Internet and into networking," Kylie Hutchison, Pacific Internet's product manager told ZDNet Australia . "We could only do this because we're an ISP and have our own infrastructure."
According to Hutchison, private networks now account for 33 percent of Pacific Internet sales. She attributed this to the sub-AU$100 price point, saying many businesses were not willing to spend more than that for a solution, as well as the flexibility that allows any type of access technology to connect to the network.
The system uses Multiprotocol Label Switching Standard (MPLS) technology, and doesn't require specialised VPN (Virtual Private Network) and security software and hardware.
