Optus unleashes broadband pricing defence

Optus has unleashed its newest defence in the broadband pricing war with Telstra and other Internet service providers, announcing significant cuts to its broadband plans.

As of today, OptusNet DSL and OptusNet Cable plans are being reduced in price by AU$5 to AU$30 a month, with each "entry-level" monthly plan being offered at AU$39.95.

The entry-level DSL plans offer a download allowance of 300MB, with speeds of 512k, and no excess usage fee for extra downloads.

Optus explains that it will speed throttle accounts that have exceeded download quotas instead of charging extra, saying the flat rate pricing on all its plans means that customers won't have any unexpected billing surprises at the end of each month.

Martin Dalgleish, managing director of Optus Consumer and Multimedia, says the Optus ADSL plans offer faster speeds than any other entry-level plans on the market, creating "new waves of competition" for the consumers' benefit.

"All our plans have a minimum speed of 512k to ensure we deliver the true rich media experience customers expect from 'real' broadband," said Dalgleish.

Optus states its plans include other benefits such as free local calls each month and 12 month contracts, adding that current Optus broadband customers will be the first to benefit as they will be automatically migrated to the new pricing system.

"The Optus approach to broadband is unique because we compete on more than just price -- we offer premium packages," said Dalgleish.

OptusNet DSL new prices:

  • 'yes' Starter 300MB AU$39.95

  • 'yes' Lite 1GB AU$49.95

  • 'yes' Unlimited* AU$69.95

  • 'yes' Unlimited Pro** AU$99.95

OptusNet Cable new prices:

  • 'yes' Lite 1GB AU$49.95

How can Optus call a plan unlimited when it simply isn't? What a joke! ZIP. No money for you.

Optus' prices here are only if you take on a bundled package, not just internet on its own. Why is it that whenever people quote Optus prices they refer to these prices but when refering to other companies that offer bundling (I'm thinking Telstra specifically) they quote stand alone price. Probably because then people would realise that Optus is more expensive than it pretends to be!!

Wow!! There are at least 3 people who support Telstra. I have had Optus cable for about three and a half years. I'll bet MY downtime is about a tenth of the Telstra cable garbage. Whoever takes on broadband is a fool if they don't analyse pricing, especially this $29.95 deal from the bit T.

Optus are a reasonable organisation to deal with, this can not be said for Telstra.

For me it's a win, win. They have reduced my cost and increased by download limit.

Optus or Telstra ADSL simply can't match the current performance my Optus cable. If you can get it go cable, unfortunatly it's not the technology of the future. But it's pretty good today.

ITS UNFORTUNATE OPTUS HAS NO PLANS FROM 1GB TO ITS UNLIMITED PACKAGE.

I THINK IT WOULD CAPTURE MORE OF THE MARKET IF IT OFFERED SAY, 2 & 5GB PACKAGES.

    DOES OPTUS HAVE THE WILL......

If anyone is considering any services with Telstra phone or internet My advice is to THINK AGAIN.
Telstra without a doubt is the Biggest Rip off communication company in Australia.
Dont become another statistic with a devious company like Telstra.
