Optus reveals final DSL pricing

Optus has announced pricing for its new DSL broadband plans, which the company expects to boost its push for a significant share of the residential DSL market.

All the 'flat rate' plans offer a 512kbps downstream speed on a 12-month contract, and reduce the speed to a dial-up connection once the data cap is reached. Optus offers the plans using Telstra copper to connect to Optus' backbone fibre network. The monthly cost of the four plans are:

  • 300MB for AU$49.95 with a bundle, AU$69.95 stand-alone
  • 1GB for AU$59.95 with a bundle, AU$79.95 stand-alone
  • 12GB for AU$79.95 with a bundle, AU$99.95 stand-alone
  • 20GB for AU$129.95 with a bundle, AU$159.95 stand-alone

The plans can be upgraded to a download speed of 1500K for a further AU$29 per month. Optus claims it already has 133,000 broadband customers on its cable network.

"Broadband household penetration in Optus cabled areas is four times greater than in non-Optus areas, reflecting the importance of Optus to broadband competition," said Martin Dalgleish, managing director of Optus consumer and multimedia.

The OptusNet commercial trial will continue until March, with customers who join the trial receiving the new pricing from today.

Corporates won't take up an opotus service due to their constant blocking of functions such as the use of external SMTP servers (they block port 25 on their broadband service) and the fact you can't host a web service using their service. When will they get it?
