Optus launches VoIP for SMBs

Optus has today unveiled a new Voice over IP (VoIP) solution for the small- to medium-sized business market.

The telco will make two services available to its business DSL customers -- ipPhone Premier and ipPhone Express, according to a statement released today.

Both services come bundled with Optus's Soft Phone application, however, it currently doesn't run on Windows Vista or Mac OS, according to Optus.

The services bundle together a range of features including call routing, call transfer, calling logs, line hunt, Find Me and Follow Me service and voicemail.

ipPhone Premier is designed for users with two to six lines, and will set businesses back AU$19.95 per line. Premier is more for businesses who want to replace their existing fixed line service.

However, ipPhone Express is primarily for businesses who want to keep their fixed-line option but add additional VoIP capabilities. The service enables users to add a single additional phone-line for AU$12 per month. Both services charge a flat rate of 12 cents for local and national calls.

"Until now SMB customers have had to accept a consumer style voice product when implementing VoIP in their business. Optus can now offer a fully functioning VoIP solution that doesn't compromise the call quality SMB customers get with their traditional fixed service," Paul Kitchin, Optus's SMB managing director said in a statement.

Meanwhile a headset may be required to make and receive calls, which Optus does not supply.

Additionally, Optus said that "calls made using ipPhone Express service count towards your broadband data usage allowance", however, this is not the case for the ipPhone Premier service.
