Optus kit damaged by Melbourne storm

Optus today confirmed that some of its equipment, housed in IT company Datacom's GlobalCenter datacentre, was damaged by yesterday's storm in Melbourne.

"[Optus] can confirm the hailstorm in Melbourne on Saturday, 6 March caused damage to a roof with subsequent water effecting one of the power sources causing a hardware failure," said Optus in an official statement sent to ZDNet.com.au.

"Service was restored after hardware fault at 2am on Sunday, 7 March."

The GlobalCenter datacentre is located on the Southbank precinct of South Melbourne, one of the areas affected by the storm.

At the time of publication, Datacom was unable to comment.
