On Friday, NSW police arrested a 21-year-old, former Optus employee at his Kingsford home, south Sydney. He was charged with unauthorised access to a computer system and two counts of unauthorised modification of data with intent to cause impairment.
Optus confirmed that the man broke into a program database but said the hacking -caused no damage and didn't gain access to any customer details".
The telco confirmed it had previously employed the culprit but refused to elaborate due to the matter still being subject to police investigation.
"Our own internal system alerted us to someone gaining access...then we alerted the police," the spokesperson explained. -I believe this has been investigated for a month or so," she added.
After issuing a search warrant, NSW Police seized computer equipment and documents.
-This is an excellent example of the Police cracking down on computer crime," the Optus spokesperson said.
The man will appear in court on March 6.
