Optus confirms non-exclusive iPhone for Australia

Optus says 'yes' to Apple's iPhone

Optus today confirmed that it has acquired a licence to sell the iPhone in Australia, as originally reported on CNET.com.au.

Parent company SingTel announced today that it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the highly anticipated handset to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia, with sales to begin from "later in the year".

The announcement comes a week after Vodafone confirmed its intention to sell the iPhone in 10 countries including Australia, making Australia one of the first countries in the world where the iPhone will be sold through numerous mobile providers. This differs from the carrier exclusive deals offered in the U.S. and parts of Europe.

The brief statement from Optus does not confirm whether the iPhone sold in Australia will be the 3G iPhone planned for sale in Italy from late June.
