Optus cable upgrade ushers in 20Mbps

in brief Optus has upgraded its cable network in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane boosting maximum speeds to up to 20Mbps on certain plans.

Existing customers will need to upgrade their plans to take advantage of the higher speeds -- offerings which include excess data charges of 15c per MB for the Fusion range and quotas which include uploads as well as downloads on all current plans.

An Optus spokesperson said that the ISP was "quite happy" for customers to remain with the legacy plans, but that it will preclude them from benefiting from the speed upgrade.

The speeds will be available for new and existing customers on the MyHome Broadband Cable and Optus Fusion cable plans. The spokesperson told ZDNet Australia said the carrier is "not charging customers for the speed upgrade".

How does that work? Anonymous -- 19/12/07

"Existing customers will need to upgrade their plans to take advantage"...
"the carrier is "not charging customers for the speed upgrade"...

...so you have to upgrade (presumably at some expense), but we're not going to charge you for additional speed?

instead of making presumptions do some research

What about the other hidden stuff Anonymous -- 27/12/07

How about this fact. When you move home, your current contract is terminated and a new contract started with new service fees and connection fees including paying in advance again(previous advance payment is credited to your new account)
This means if you are 18mths into a 24mth contract(does not matter how long) and you change residence, then you will be put on a new 24mth contract and charged new contract fees

Optus = RIP OFF, with there new plans Leighton T -- 01/01/08

I moved about 2 months ago and transfered my cable service from Optus to my new address and regrettably changed my plan as they have NO option to keep your old plan. I have been with Optus for about 5+ years. My old plan was 20Gb PEAK and 40Gb off peak upload NOT counted for about $72 a month (no direct debit) new plan is 15Gb FLAT inc uploads!! for about $65 and locked into a 24 month contract (RIP OFF!) when i asked the gentelman from the Optus call centre why they include uploads and no longer have off peak I was told the 'Marketing department' thought customer did not want off peak downloads..... as a result i will be braking my contract and going to another ISP.
