Optus boosts broadband numbers

Optus today claimed to have "regained momentum and share" in the broadband market after adding 50,000 new customers in the recently-completed March quarter.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the Singapore Telecommunications-owned unit said it was "challenging the market once again" and had driven its total number of broadband customers -- including those taken on in April -- above 550,000.

Warren Hardy, acting managing director for Optus Consumer, said he expected "an even more promising quarter ahead" thanks to the launch of an AU$19.95 per month broadband plan and 30-day trial offer.

The move comes as Optus migrates customers to its AU$150 million broadband network and comes a day ahead of the release of the unit's fourth quarter results.
