in brief Optus has outlined the additional cost its iPhone customers face if they want to use their device as a modem.

Optus today put an end to speculation over whether it would charge for tethering — a feature made available in the OS 3.0 update Apple issued today which enables the iPhone to act as a mobile modem.

The telco has opted for $9.99 per month flat fee which applies to all data packages and unlocks the tethering feature, and will only be available to post-paid customers, Optus said tdoay. For example, iPhone customers on the $59 500MB cap would pay an additional $9.99. To activate the feature, customers needed to call customer service. They won't be able to use the feature until Monday 22 June, however.

The telco has yet to announce pricing for the iPhone 3G S, which has been released in the US but is due in Australia on 26 June.

Optus has not yet posted full details about the terms and conditions but said it expected to do so via its website on Monday.

    This is outrageous!
If I already pay for my data allowance, now COptus want to police how I can actually access that data. This feature costs them nothing, but they charge for a standard feature to access something I already pay for....

Well actually, the truth is Im currently a Telstra NextG customer, but was considering moving to Optus for the Iphone. Ive changed my mind. I urge Optus to change theirs

. ...And I'll keep using my 3 year old Nokia 6120c as a tethered device for free, thanks.

How to enable it Anonymous -- 18/06/09 (in reply to #320144263)

Its easy to hack the iphone to enabled tethering anyway..
    Damn you optus.

Stuff Optus, mine is tethered right now:

    What?!?! Matt -- 18/06/09

So other phones can be tethered without an additional charge, but the if you tether the iPhone, you get slugged 10 bucks?

What's so special about the iPhone to warrant this? I call greedy profiteering!

Hey ACCC, do your job for once!

ACCC? Anonymous -- 19/06/09 (in reply to #320144343)

The ACCC will do nothing. I have already contacted them several times regarding Apple requiring the iPhone gets sold with a SIM. I have the boss paying for the mobile calls and data, but I need to provide the phone. I do not need a SIM card, I need a phone. It's an iPhone, not an iContract or an iSIM.

What?!?! mbj -- 19/06/09 (in reply to #320144343)

Cannot imagine how loud the wailing would be, if this had been a new Telstra pricing policy ! It's good to see (and about time) that Optus has copped some flak for once !

    f%$k you optus caindude -- 19/06/09

ou need to go to the following link http://help.benm.at/help.php using iPhone's Safari browser

    Apple Tax Anonymous -- 19/06/09

It's the same as every other Apple product. If you want to use an Apple device, regardless of whether the same features are available elsewhere, you will pay more...It's the Apple Tax.

    I Thought everyone knew that

    My goodess! N McCoy -- 20/06/09

I'm on on the $49 Optus plan, which I understood to include 250MB of data. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay extra to access some of it.
The other ridiculous thing is this just seems to be an iPhone _feature_? Why?
With reluctance I got an iPhone and grew to enjoy it but if this sticks I have no issue dropping the phone and I'll be switching provider. I may try my luck with consumer affairs before doing all that, but it's all just simply ludicrous.
Optus get a clue and get one quickly.

My goodness, gracious me........... Anonymous -- 23/06/09 (in reply to #320144790)

Too many people expect too much for nothing........that is why so many Telstra whingers are out there. Someone has to pay, surely, and if this was a Telstra thing, the hollering would be very loud indeed.

    You're beautiful Anonymous -- 23/06/09

Poor you(s). I can see how your breath is sucked by Optus.

And then you have shallow breath. Optus enjoys the moments. And then the Penguin families snicker at you on TV ads. How stupid you(s) are !

And then you find out you buy Honda CRV and you have to use Caltex only. Whether you like it or not. Becos iphone to be sold with SIM.

And then your blood is sucked too. You later find out your CRV can only speed at max 25km/h. Unless you pay "tethering" to unlock...

    "Yes !!! Optus.".... "yes !!!"

Do you realize how stupid that sounded, you f....wit!

iphone users deserve it Johnny Disaster -- 28/06/09
