Nokia Australia set to admit to phone defects

Nokia Australia appears to be closer to admitting that its popular 8210 handset carries a design fault.

Nokia Australia has consistently rejected allegations made by hundreds of ZDNet Australia readers that it has knowingly sold phones carrying design defects, claiming that the display problem does not effect a significant number of customers.

According to a report from Associated Press, its Finnish parent company today confirmed that the display in a batch of the phones manufactured at the end of 2001 carry faults. The company is claiming that the display problems are triggered by cold weather and "bright light".

For now, Nokia Australia is clinging to hope offered by the wording of the reports.

A spokesperson for the company said the statements issued in Europe "only apply to units sold in the Nordic region and primarily in Sweden". However, leaving itself an avenue to reverse its position spokesperson added, "we will advise should this situation change."

The alleged faults are currently the subject of an investigation by the NSW government Department of Fair Trading.

The department said it has received large number of complaints regarding the handsets.

Late last year, ZDNet Australia reported that a former employee had come forward supporting the allegations. Contradicting the company's statements he alleged that the company had been aware of that the design faults affect a broad range of Nokia handsets built after the company retired the Nokia 2110.

The former employee's allegations lent credibility to reports from Nokia customers and mobile phone suppliers, claiming to have witnessed unusually high rates of failure amongst Nokia 8210s.

"I bought 18 Nokia 8210s in December last year and not long after I had to return 5 because the wires connecting the hands free socket to the base of the phone were never connected properly. Subsequently I have sent 7 phones back to have their LCD screens fixed," said Melbourne-based IT Manager, Martin Curlis.

In damage control today, Nokia Australia refused to comment on the likelihood of link between the faults exhibited by 8210 handsets in Europe and Australia.

"It has to be investigated," said Nokia spokesperson Antony Wilson. "We'll wait and see what results from that."

The department of Fair Trading has so far failed to respond to requests for comment.

I had the screen problem as well - it's not so much the screen but more the time you are left without a phone while it's being repaired - that being said I've has screen problems with every Nokia I've ever had, not just 8210!

I have had a 8110 for 1 year and have had the screen replaced once. Now at 18 months the problem has resurfaced, and I cant get a warranty claim. I have always used Nokia but when my contract expires I will have to look at another brand. This really annoys me as I like their phones.

My partner and I both have 8210's and have had nothing but problems with the LCD's/screen on both of them. Considering the purchase cost its a fairly expensive, obviously disposable item.

I should have take the journo's lead at WCIT and baled up the CTO of Nokia had I known my 8210 would display symptoms of a bad quality test pattern on the weekend.
I have had repeated problems with it displaying 'no sim' messages and subsequently disconnecting during a call, usually fixed by a 'reboot'. I look forward to further developments on this story...

I have returned my Nokia 8210 for screen repairs twice in 13 months. When I contacted Nokia, the customer service representative told me that it was not their problem and that Nokia were not responsible for the handsets!! (not sure how she worked that out)

I have had my 8210's LCD screen replaced twice in just a month and a half. The first one was in the mid of January 2002, and the second one was just this Sunday. Today I took it to Nokia Repair Centre in Melbourne CBD and was told that it was gonna take at least 1-2 weeks until the new lot of screens, which are supposed to be the fault-fixed version, arrived. I asked people around me and found out that we went there on the same purpose, having the 8210 screen replaced. Hmm, Nokia, what are you gonna say? Stop being a coward, come forward and admit the faults, people will forgive you and you may win some popularity back!!!!!

They have similar problems with the 7110, and won't acknowledge them. Sold as a WAP phone .My screen died several times - they said it was water damage - voided my warranty, and left me with an unfulfilled contract, so I had to purchase another phone (not Nokia!!) to continue the contract . Cost $450
Customer service was appalling. and arrogant. Would be delighted to join a class action!

Yeh my 5110 had the same problem. I moved to a Siemens phone and am very happy - (it is also technically way beyond ANY Nokia phone)

I sell phones & tell people not to avoid 8210 & 8250 like the plague, as I am sick of seeing the same customers, usually after the 14 day exchange policy, bringing back blank screen phones, only to have to tell them that the turnaround is up to 3 weeks! (600 phones?) My advice is Ericsson, Siemens & others are bringing out some extremely good ie reliable phones so put aside prejudices (don't like aerials, flips etc) and try something else.
Have you ever tried to salvage phone numbers from a phone with a blank screen?

I bought a Nokia 8250 over a year ago now. At the beginning of this year the display started having problems and then died completely. When I took this in to be serviced, I had to wait over 4 weeks to have the phone replaced with a refurbished unit. At the time of dropping the unit of for service I was told one week, then every week I called I was told the next week. Nokia had no idea when they could supply me with a phone and I was told that some people had waited months. This tells me that there must be a lot of these phones having the same issue.

Not even 2 weeks after receiving the replacement phone, it too suffered the same screen problem. This time I went back to Nokia and they agreed to replace the phone with a new unit, something that they would not do the previous time. After a week I received the new phone and so far, touch wood, it's OK.

A friend of mine has had the same problem with the Nokia 8850 on repeated occasions.

Nokia has a lot to answer for, the question is, do they really care what we as consumers think? I heard that these phones had display problems around the middle of last year, yet they have done nothing to address the situation.

The 8850 & 8250 models are aimed at the business market, this sort of unreliability is totally unacceptable but will anyone do anything about it?

I bought my Nokia 8010 back around the end of '96. From day one, the battery was prone to effectively turning off and disconnecting my line. I have never bought Nokia since, given the experience I had with what should have been a top of the range model.

Recently upgraded from a 7110 and no probs whatsoever. bought an 8310 in dec2001 and have just had first ever repair of a nokia phone. the internal phone memory was faulty & the phone mysteriously switched itself on & off. took it in for service (under warranty) & despite waiting for up to 1 hour to see someone about it I had the phone fully repaired within 3 hours (though, if i had taken it to my phone outlet, where i bought it, i would have had to wait 2-3weeks - i guess sometimes it pays to live close to a major city).
