Minchin resigned from the shadow ministry last week, protesting his party's support of the government's legislation on the carbon pollution reduction scheme. Now that Tony Abbott (who had also resigned from the ministry in protest) has been voted in this morning as the new Liberal Party leader, Minchin could possibly be appointed back into the shadow communications position.
Yet when asked by ZDNet.com.au whether Minchin would like to be shadow communications minister again, a spokesperson for the senator only expressed how Minchin had enjoyed "holding Senator Conroy to account over his total mishandling of broadband policy". Abbott would select his new front bench in due course, the spokesperson pointed out.
"I will serve in whatever capacity the leader will have me to serve," Minchin said in a statement.
