Lundy is lying about pair gains: Telstra

Telstra has accused the federal Opposition of "deliberately misleading and misinforming to the public" in its attempts to revive community concern over the telecommunications company's controversial use of pair gain technology.

According to the Shadow Minister for Information Technology, Senator Kate Lundy, around 2,000 people have written to her complaining about the use of pair gains technology. The technique, which allows Telstra to provide multiple telephone lines over a single copper connection, is associated with diminished data speeds in outlying and regional areas.

"People think they have been buying a new line when they are only buying a dial tone, and in an age where any phone line may also be used as a data connection," Lundy said. "Telstra have also withheld information about the nature of their pair gain connection."

However, Telstra flatly denies Lundy's allegations, information regarding how services were provided to customers was readily available to the public.

"If customers ring up and want to know how their service is provided we tell them," the spokesperson said. "We pointed this out in June when Lundy started to spread misinformation about how services are delivered, and how our network is put together."

Telstra also defended the use of pair gain technology, the spokesperson said such a connection is often the only option for customers who live more than 3.5 kms from an exchange, as copper-based data services diminish at greater distances.

"If you are on a very long copper run you would be better to run on a pair gain in some circumstances," said the spokesperson. "Our telephone service was developed for voice, we stress that data transfer speeds will vary, we won't guarantee the availability of broadband or ADSL in all areas and if customers ring up and want to know how their service is provided we tell them."

A recent ACCC investigation into the procedure found that Telstra's conduct did not raise any specific trade practices issues, however the corporate watchdog conceded the telecommunications company's information provision regarding the practice had lead to "customer confusion".

"The Commission has worked closely with Telstra to improve the level of information that Telstra provides to consumers regarding these network issues," a spokesperson for the ACCC said.

Kate Lundy should be congratulated for creating some public awareness concerning Pair Gain technology. I have personally experienced Telstras confusing explanation and would even say that Telstras own employees are not well eductated on the matter. Telstra are content to install a substandard data service without warning customers of the implications.
I personally spent 6 months trying to find out why a dialup connection I configured could only connect at around 24Kbps. Telstra couldn't or wouldn't tell.

Telstra, you have zero creditabilty in this matter, as a victim of your so called pair gain policy I know you dont tell users what type of service they have.

Stop lying and FIX IT THE PROBLEM!

just incase you ever do a follow up on telstra's shoddy pair gain lines. I thought I'd let you know that its not just rural areas that suffer. I live in Adelaide in SA about 15 mins from the city center in a brand new developement....my local exchange is 4km away. I have been shafted with a RIM / PAIR gain connection in my brand new home. I cannot get DSL , CABLE etc and have been told my only option is VERY EXPENSIVE satalite conenction which is an expensive joke.

The telstra tech I spoke to admitted that the reason for using the RIM / Pair gain in my new area is because its "cheaper to lay narrow cable than to lay a full set of copper" and that it is purly done for financial reasons. The complaints I made resulted in being told that testra dont care if data is slow or doesnt work...they only install lines to be used for voice. my only option if I want better internet is to spend HUNDREDS of dollars a month on their satalite or move to a new house.

Basically they dont care, they are protected under the act and refuse to offer help. I would be a bit more understanding if I lived in the outback....but 15 mins from a major city center ? thats a joke.

PAIR GAINS ARE USED IN THE CITY AS WELL WHERE THIER IS PAIR SHORTAGE SUPPOSED TO BE TEMP BUT STAYS IN USE FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS I KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE INSTALLED THEM AND REMOVED THEM

Sydney, Cherrybrook, 15 mins from CBD. Pair Gained without notice, refused information on other options. Depite diconnecting 3 previous lines on this rental house I was promptly told no unpaired lines were available. 20 K is the best connection I can get. and it drops out often. The ISP checked the line quality and rejected it. Telstra will not advise on a time for a replacement. The satelite option on offer is downlink only. you still need the line for uplink (or outgoing info) So expense aside , it is not an answer except for pure browsing.

This company is not motivated towards good , flexible service levels , they cant be with the focus on selling the company. It is up to the government to change tack or get on with it. This nowhere situation is intolerable.

    John Hadlow,

15min from the cbd !!!, glebe is 15min from cbd not some backwater like cherrybrook.

its quite simple , you pay for a voice service and thats what you get.pay for a data line if you want hight speeds and quit your whining.

Mordialloc, Vic. 21Kms from Melbourne CBD (recently voted equal Best City in the world - I agree apart from the fact that areas of CBD are in the stone age where Internet is concerned). Pair Gains in brand new housing area right in the middle of established housing. I live 1.5kms away from the ADSL enabled exchange (MLOC). Line for dial-up drops out often with best speed ~20kbps. This sounds like a Telstra ploy to gain more revenue from Pair Gains services having to continually make phone calls to re-connect. I would ahppily pay to have new copper laid to my house. Telstra said no. Satellite is too expensive and relies on dial-up (one way plan) for up-load. I was told by both Telstra and line laying company that my copper would provide ADSL. Why did they lie?

For a company promoting broadb ...Anonymous -- 06/11/02

For a company promoting broadband access, Telstra certainly is having a communications problem. I can understand using pair gain in areas where single dwellings have been replaced by flats (as is my situation), but not in new developments.

I can only assume that Telstra wants to force new developments onto cable instead of ADSL, and older developments onto its incredibly expensive ISDN (except of course that if you can't get ADSL you generally can't get ISDN either). Those of us who will never have access to ADSL, ISDN or cable? We're stuffed.

But don't expect Telstra to be truthful with customers. And don't blame Telsta, either. Blame its humans, since they are the ones who know the truth but refuse to reveal it. We've just seen that Telstra employees are quite happy to perjure themselvs in court, make false oaths, and otherwise engage in conspiracies to defraud Telstra customers. So forget about a fair go.

Telstra has given its' pair gain customers a raw deal. How do you get broadband internet connections if you are on their pair gain system- That's right you can forget about it. The adoption of the pair gain technology is just amnother example of bad decision making by Telstra. As I understand it there are 3.0 Million people stuck with pair gains

Telstra should not be flogged off until it "fixes" the pair gain problem.
Last week, a Telstra rep contacted me to offer a special deal for broadband. I informed the rep that I doubted her as I was on pair gain. I was then told that my number was on her list for broadband so I must be able to access it. Despite her assurances, I rang the Telstra techno number where I was told that broadband was not available and the guy had the cheek to tell me that their records told him that I had enquired on other times and the answer was still no. What a slap in the face.

Telstra must be living on anot ...John Campbell -- 20/11/02

Telstra must be living on another planet. If you ring up and ask them what technology you are going to get with your new connection- are you kidding? So you ring up and ask to get the phone connected and the first question you ask is what technology are you giving me-sure!!! The sales staff you order through couldn't tell you that. No Telstra are the smoke and mirror merchants not Lundy. As an example, I live in a multistage development that is around 5 years old. I live next door to a house that is years older than mine and they have cable technology and I have pair gains technology.
Good technology choice Telstra. So I would have picked that over cable if I was given an informed opinion of what I was getting. Telstra are never upfront about anything and if they weren't pushed by OPTUS we would be in a sorry state paying top price for their second rate services services

Telstra have put me on a pair-gain...a place called kemps creek...next to badgery's creek and near blue mtns...and i normally connect at 31.2kbps....and if im real lucky..33.6kbps. My slow internet has gave me a angry & hateful view on telstra. I can only get satellitre which offers about 500 ping...useless for online games...so i'm stuck with a crappy connection until telstra come replace the pair-gain with proper phone lines...but im not going to hold my breath

    p.s Damn u telstra!!!

Telstra, PAIR GAIN HA, I am in a "new suburb" and am on pair gain. NO BROADBAND . Offered ISDN @ very expensive rates. When I am able to get broadband TELSTRA I will not go with you. You do not get back to your customers.

Telstra is a joke. There is an easy solution to all of this. Ask people without Internet and computers at home if they would like a discount on their monthly line rental. They will say yes and give them a PGL and save the dedicated copper lines for people willing to pay full line rental price. There are thousands of homes not wanting or needing the bloody good lines.

I moved next door and went from a dedicated line to a PGL. Can you believe that.

Its a joke that a 2003 built home cannot supply 2003 communication requirements. I rang Telstra before building in a new development to confirm ADSL was available and they said "couldnt be sure as you don`t have a number issued yet, but your exchange is enabled, shouldnt be a problem." I now find out about pair gain and am told now I have a phone line connected and a number issued that cant get it. I wouldnt have built had I known this - my old 1960`s rental had cable and ADSL available, yet a NEW house can`t support ADSL???In a NEW housing development? The only reason I got the phone conected was to supply ADSL and I even data cabled in the house in anticipation of being able to receive it. Otherwise I don`t require a land line phone - have mobile, use internet etc. Its a joke - I have a heap of PC power and all I can do online is check emails...
