Local banks to outsource more ATM services?

A number of banks have added weight to predictions by ATM providers that outsourcing of ATM services in Australia will grow by 30 percent over the next two years.

The prediction follows a poll of financial institutions and ATM suppliers conducted by the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) at a recent conference.

According to consumer access machine provider NCR, the growth is a natural consequence of recent bank strategy.

"Banks have been making some concerted efforts to move transactions out of the branch," said John Elsworth, director ATM channel management, NCR Australia.

Banks are also seeking to leverage cost advantages from economies of scale enjoyed by dedicated ATM network service providers, according to Elsworth.

Elsworth predicts that banks will soon seek to push more sophisticated bank transactions onto Australian streets. Among them, cash and check deposit services that can be processed by ATMs without human intervention which, he predicts, are less than 12 months away.
