Liberals misfire in FTTN funding attack

Opposition communications spokesperson, Bruce Billson, has misfired in an attack on the Federal government over the use of the AU$2.4 billion Communications Fund to back the national fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) network.

Billson said last night that the Federal Labor government had "quietly retreated from its reckless and shameless plan to raid the AU$2 billion Communications Fund" after it discharged the Telecommunications Legislation Amendment (Communications Fund) Bill 2008 from the Senate notice paper yesterday.

"It is unclear what Labor plans to now do in relation to the Communications Fund, but I am hopeful it has finally accepted its raid was unnecessary," said Billson in a statement, the latest in a series of attacks on the government for its proposed use of the funds.

It was revealed today, however, that the AU$2.4 billion fund is on its way to being adapted and absorbed into the new Building Australia Fund &mdash pending further legislative amendments &mdash as part of the government's 2008 Federal Budget.

A spokesperson for Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy today described the removal of the Senate notice for the amendment as "a formality only" in light of the adaptation of the fund.

Minister for Infrastructure, Senator Anthony Albanese — speaking in Communications Minister Stephen Conroy's absence — noted in a parliamentary committee hearing today that Billson's claims "could not be further from the truth" in relation to the proposed use of the fund.

Senator Conroy is currently attending the OECD ministerial meeting on the Future of The Internet Economy in South Korea, a commitment which also caught the attention of Opposition MP Billson.

"It would appear he is desperately scratching around the world looking for a way to turn Labor's election broadband sound bites into something resembling sound public policy," said Billson.

The Victorian Liberal MP responded to the gaffe today, saying: "What this development highlights is more policy on the run".

"Just before the Budget, Labor decided that money for broadband should be rolled into the Building Australia Fund. Why? Because the Opposition had highlighted the lack of clarity about how exactly they were going to source the AU$4.7 billion," he said.

Traitorous Act. Sydney Lawrence -- 19/06/08

Billson and his gang were the people that wanted to donate one billion dollars of Australian taxpayer money to a foreign Government to spite an Australian company, Telstra. Occupy the opposition benches Senator Billson and reflect on your horror past performance.

Oh please Ben -- 19/06/08 (in reply to #320104551)

Whilst Telstra is is an Australian based business it is being run (into the ground if you ask me) by it's American owner and his three amigos. This is the same company who is continueing to axe Australian employee's in favor of cheaper options over seas. The last thing Australia needs is a continued monopoloy on infrastructure. A monopoly which doesn't innovate or change it's tune unless there is competition involved and make it extremely hard for other businesses to invest on thier own. Crying fowl and going through lawsuit after lawsuit (and losing) when something doesn't go their way. I would much rather see an efficent and cost effective solution where the network isn't run by the retailers directly and is completely transparent, offering FAIR prices and access to all competitors making it much cheaper and viabale for the consumer. It will be a cold cold day in hell before i ever go back to Telstra in any way, shape or form.

Stop the bludge. Sydney Lawrence -- 19/06/08 (in reply to #320104553)

Ben who you choose for your supplier is up to you but please educate yourself before you comment on the ownership of Telstra.

Sol Trujillo is the CEO of Telstra. Telstra is owned by 1,600,000 Australians. Telstra in not a monopoly. All Telstra assets have been paid for by the Australian owners.

If others wish to acquire Telstra property they must negotiate a price acceptable to Telstra. The parasitic bludge on Telstra must stop and opponents must invest and build to compete.

Telstra supporters are a bunch of racist bigots Anonymous -- 19/06/08 (in reply to #320104570)

Syd I find your post extremely bias and only interested in seeing Telstra succeed at any cost (cost of every Australian) often you have really nothing to offer to this discussion but Telstra Blah Blah Blah. You might as well be on Telstras payroll.

Why not think outside the square, put Australia first and stop bagging and insulting people who just have a difference of opinion. Telstra and people like you are not interested in seeing better broadband services in Australia; you use this topic to manipulate the consumers for your own interest.

Everyone needs to put their 2 cent to contribute. However what we dont want is 1 major player having too much influence and control over the entire industry, like Telstra had in the past and still has today, until Telstra is fully structurally separated I dont see this changing. The only thing Ive seen Telstra do is delay and further delay, certainly not in the best of Australia but Telstras.

Australia is in need of the good telecommunication network but more then that Australian wants the options and choices.

Competition or not? Sydney Lawrence -- 20/06/08 (in reply to #320104588)

Anonymous thank you for your interesting reply to my above Post. Granted you and I are both biased but happily express our views with thanks to ZDNet Australia.

Would you be so kind as to answer me one question considering your plea for competition.
If other than Telstra are granted the NBN build and then Telstra, to provide competition, decide to build their own FTTN/H would you object????

"True Competition" Sean -- 20/06/08 (in reply to #320104624)

    yeh!!! Good point Sydney!!

These people who always cry about competition would object to "true Competition" you refer to above.

In other words they still want the bludge to continue at Telstra's expense whilst Singtel/Optus syphon the prphets off overseas!!

The Australian public need to be aware of this!!!
