Late fines of $40 million doesn't cover Telstra's costs

Telstra reportedly collected AU$40 million in late fines from its customers last year, but the telco claims the money it pockets from late payments still doesn't cover costs.

The AU$5.50 late fee was introduced in April 2000 in order to recoup costs incurred in recovering money owed. However, the collective fees only go part of the way in recouping these costs, according to the telecoms giant.

-We incur an enormous amount of expense in chasing late payments," Telstra spokesperson Michael Herskope told ZDNet Australia. -There are costs in postage, phone calls, staff hours, letter printing, etc."

-We'd prefer to have customers pay on time than collect a late fee from them," he said, adding that there are numerous ways to avoid paying the late fee, from pre-paid home service to direct debit.

Optus, which recently doubled its late fine from AU$5.50 to AU$11.00, refused to disclose how much it had collected.

I wonder why people don't pay ...Luke Yelavich -- 19/06/02

I wonder why people don't pay their bills on time??? Let me think. Would it have anything to with the actual pricing of Telstra's products?

The late fee and then the disc ...Anonymous -- 20/06/02

The late fee and then the disconnection/reconnection fee is exorbitant, considering there is no such thing as courtesy call to customer before disconnection.I have been campaigning for several years that Small business cannot pay their bills within 14 days of issuance of statement.Like all australian businesses, including Government departments, bills are paid after 30days from month of issue of statements. Telstra victimises its customers and has found a convenient way to raise another 40million dollars. This is still not doing their stockmarket performance any good. I wonder what is their next gimmick to slug the customer. The reality is that Telcos are only creating more disgruntled customers. The Virgin 'Bill rage advertisement' amply describes the situation, even though it was meant to be funny.
