Mel, and I know this gets boring, but what is your reason for continually bagging Telstra without logical examination of the situation.
It could well be that the Ipswich City Council, in desperation, seek a chance to recoup the cost of filling the hole.
I think if I were a ratepayer of Ipswich I would question the $750,000 reported cost of filling in the hole in the road, seems rather high.
Also, a local T.V. report said the leak was caused by corrosion of the water pipe. And Mel, really what has this situation to do with plastic bags?
$750K rather high? I guess by Telstra standards it is.
Why spend $750K when $100K will do the trick. We can save money by only working during normal hours. No hurry to fix it, itâs not going anywhere after all.
No point calling in people urgently either, weâll just book all the people required and wait for the usual 2-3 week period before they become available to do the work. No need to co-ordinate the work either, weâll just dig it up again later and blame the contractors for the delay and find someone to sue to cover costs. Itâll give our legal team something to do, after all theyâre really not doing that much.
We donât have to check for damages to existing infrastructure and repair it. Weâll just bury it and if itâs faulty, just wait for someone to log a call, dig it up again to repair it then charge the person for a no fault found call.
And speaking of burying. No point using cement, that costs money, especially for the number of trucks/men required, at no notice, urgently, through the night, to fill that hole. Weâll just use sand/dirt from another site, chances are weâll just have to dig it up again anyway so no point doing a good job.
If we add a little glue to the surface layer and spray paint it black, itâll pass long enough for bitumen to pass final inspection and then we can blame the Council when it falls apart as they did the final signoff on the 1000 page contract. Not our fault they didnât read page 876, section 2B, paragraph 3, subsection 3(h) clause 23 (i) under Bird Strikes.
If this is the level of debate that exists in Australia God help us all.
Sydney - what is your reason for continually and irrationally spruiking Telstra? Your comments here are pure supposition with flimsy supporting 'evidence' from a TV programme you saw or heard about. Mel's comment, whilst humourous, is based on Telstra's attempts to bandaid existing problems with its infrastructure. Anyway, it's fun baggging Telstra. They deserve to be bagged continuously!
Lets watch and see how this story develops.
Sydney, the comment was sarcastic more than anything else. I do agree that the request for $750,000 by Ipswich Council is excessive though in saying that Telstra is accustomed to the same practice. Check your Telstra bills for further information.
I think the words "a few years ago" indicate that the ipswich council havent been exactly proactive in fixing the issue for their constituates.
Rather than leaving the bloody mess to create a great big hole, they could have sometime in the last few years, possibly gotten off their cans to fix it?
I don't really think that would be unreasonable to ask, considering thats what a council is meant to do.
Always Telstra to blame if you can't do your job properly I guess.
Mention telstra in a headline and you will get Mr Sommersberg making a stupid comment. The guy has no clue and his comments are worthless.
mmm seems to me that the council inspectors that signed off the work for Telstra will have a few anxious moments.
And I can see this turning into one of the endless Telsra bashing diatribes that ZDnet seems to be fostering.
Mel, as the greatest attack dog the world has ever seen I am sure you were not offended by my sarcasm. I hope I live long enough to see you say one good thing about Telstra. They always speak well of you.
Sydney, I've sided with Telstra and also you in many threads here. My record of calling it like I see it speaks for itself. It just happens that this particular thread is not one of those I mention.
If you could enlighten me as to when they ever spoke well of me then I'd be pleased to hear about it. I don't have any recent recollection of any compliments coming my way from them heh.
Had a customer who had her lead in cable repaired some while back in 2003.... then her driveway developes a lovely sized pothole in 2007... the pipe leading to her sinkwell had been cut... in its place is a telstra cable... It seriously wouldnt surprise me that this may be telstras fault, all it takes is one lazy contractor saying, 'yeah she'll be right, its friday and i wanna get home' packing up his gear before the whole jobs done and bang, 3 years later the repair work fails
