Internet service provider Internode has signed up for 2.5 gigabits per second more international capacity from Southern Cross Cable's Network and says it has plans to buy another 12.5 gigabits.

Southern Cross had been providing 5Gbps to the ISP, with the increase announced today to take the purchased capacity to 7.5Gbps. Internode hopes to ramp up capacity to 10Gbps by the middle of this year and double it again next year.

"We expect to further expand our protected [Southern Cross] capacity to 20 gigabits per second by some time next year, to continue our capacity expansion," Internode managing director Simon Hackett said in a statement.

Internode spokesperson John Harris said that the increase had not come at the expense of the company's other cable providers. Internode currently buys 15Gbps, 7.5Gbps from Southern Cross (including the new purchase) and the rest mainly from Australia-Japan Cable and Pipe Networks.

Pipe Networks shareholders are voting today on whether to approve the company's planned acquisition by TPG.

Hackett said the expansion was to meet growth in customer numbers. "The Southern Cross Cable proposition, with the lowest latency to the US and fully protected circuit capacity, is the highest-quality internet path to the US — hands down," he said.
