Hydro Tasmania sparks comms upgrade

Hydro Tasmania has awarded an AU$4 million-plus contract for stage one of a telecommunications network upgrade designed to boost performance of mission-critical operations.

The contract, awarded to Siemens, includes the replacement of a legacy backbone network with synchronous digital hierarchy microwave radio.

According to a statement released today, the project encompasses delivery of increased bandwidth, reliability and longevity for operations such as supervisory control and data acquisition, protection services, access control and condition monitoring.

It will also support Hydro Tasmania's entry into the National Electricity Market - through which it will buy and sell electricity to the national grid - and the state's wind farm developments.

The three-stage project is due for completion by mid-2007, with the first stage to be completed by August 2003.
