Hutchison finally announces 3G launch date

Hutchison has announced it will launch its third generation mobile service "3" on April 15, just over two weeks after Telstra's 3G network goes live.

Hutchison played down the impact of Telstra's new 3G Mobile Loop Service, describing the launch date for "3" as "in step with our previously announced timing".

Hutchison will open 20 stores to promote its 384 Kbps 3G service, which will include live person-to-person video calling. The company refers to this feature as "true 3G services", in reference to the Telstra service, which at 144 Kbps cannot perform video conferencing.

Pricing details for 3 has not been revealed.
