Govt must jump on broadband-wagon, says IIA

The Internet Industry Association will use Australia's upcoming federal election to bolster a compaign aimed at heightening government support of broadband Internet.

The privately funded industry group said it would deliberately time its campaign - primarily related to the development of broadband Interet - to fall in the months leading up to the election, which is expected to be held in the last months of 2001.

IIA chief executive Peter Coroneos said government departments had already indicated interest in the campaign.

Coroneos said the industry group would demand that the Australian government ensured it would make broadband available to all Australians, invest in Australian broadband content and deregulate the broadband sector to accelarate new digital services.

The group would also campaign for higher online security for all Australians, and removal of taxes that apply only to e-commerce.

-Given the expected closeness of the election, this is an offer they can't ignore," Coroneos said.

Broadband is very important to me.
Needless to say that the current situation is more than excessively disappointing.

Telstra's privatisation worked against the consumers. The government's prevention of allowing REAL competition is not helping either.
