Getting 3G wireless airborne in Australia

Industry pundits at ATUG's 2002 conference admitted there is still work to be done in developing suitable applications for 3G wireless technology.

While addressing the floor, Ross Fowler, CEO of Alcatel, said there was a need to test applications on m.Net, the 3G network set up by a consortium in Adelaide last week.

N+I 2002 Special Coverage "Application developers need a network to play with," Fowler said. "The real impediment today is to get the applications know to the public," Fowler said.

m.Net was set up with an AU$9 million grant under the Commonwealth Government BITS iniative, and will be researching wireless data applications. There are seven base stations set up in Adelaide's CBD. In addition, a base station has also been set up in Whyalla which will look at delivery of services in rural areas.

Fowler agrees that there are still other issues to be overcome as well, with it as yet unknown what performance levels customers will be able to expect from 3G. He said that this was one of the areas m.Net would be addressing.

Sometimes, a well-placed and well-timed letter can make all the difference. Other times, it can make no difference at all — and even hurt your case. This week's missive by the Competitive Carriers' Coalition, I would suggest, falls into the latter category.
