First global SMS sent via Australia

The first truly global SMS message passed through Australia at 1.52am last night, as Logica set a world record by sending a text message around the world in 197.53 seconds.

This was outside the 160 second goal set by Logica, but will still allow subscribers to maintain SMS services provided by their phone companies while overseas.

Logica used the attempt to demonstrate the capabilities of its newly launched Global Interconnect Network, which has established a worldwide messaging service that extends the delivery of text messages to anywhere in the world.

The global message was started at the group's exhibition stand at 3GSM World Congress in France, and travelled through South Africa, Brazil, USA, Australia and Hong Kong before returning to the source. Each country added their initials, so the final message read 'Be Global, FR SA BR NA AU CH'.

To achieve this the message had to negotiate five different hybrid systems of GSM, as well as CDMA, which is used in Brazil.

I think you have got it wrong guys, (in reference to comments posted before this one) i too have been sending SMS messages around the world but if you read the story they sent an SMS message around the world and each country singed it to say it has passed though, chain letter style. The only problem i find is that what was the point? it is not like this is going to impress anybody, it only shows that as per usual ZDNet is low on stories since they have posted just about everything they could bad mouthing hackers or anyone who dares to use a computer for anything other than checking email using Outlook and writing a letter using MS Word. Put this domain to good use and report something useful.
