First Australian 3G phone-call made

After all the hype, third generation (3G) mobile phone services are operating in Australia.

The first 3G phone-call has been made between two politicians in Whyalla and Adelaide, using a network rolled out by m.Net Corporation, a consortium of multi-nationals, universities and software developers.

-Whyalla was selected because it is a major regional industrial centre and an ideal test-bed for a wide range of 3G products and services that can benefit regional communities," said m.Net chief executive officer, Andrew Ekiert.

-One of the features which 3G can support, which is very important for regional communities, is access to specialist services through video conferencing," said Ekiert.

This will form the basis of a six-month trial of Healthspring, a system designed to give health professionals instant access to medical records and remote online video consulting with specialists. It provides a single interface for users, who are unaware they are accessing different computer systems at different places to access information, according to a press release.

The technology is being touted as a way to ease the over-burdened hospital system.
