Exchange failure cuts off Optus customers

A power failure at a Sydney exchange left Optus customers without e-mail access last night, and many cut off from Internet services altogether.

The exchange went down at 5:33pm (AEDT) yesterday, according to Optus. OptusNet e-mail services around the country were then disrupted until 11:50pm, when normal service was restored.

Optus dial-up and broadband customers may also have had difficulty connecting to the Internet for about 30 minutes after the exchange failure, according to Optus. Internet customers in NSW, ACT and Queensland were affected.

There's a bit more history to these problems that Optus is having because i've had issues with my home phone and broadband not working properly for the past 2 weeks since Optus upgraded to Optus Direct - basically bypassing the Telstra exchange. I got the TIO involved after the phone not working for four days and tech support phone calls beyond 45 mins, then the phone began to partially work (outbound) and the broadband stopped working. Now, a new modem was due 2 days ago ...
