Dingo blue denies reduced services

Dingo Blue claims it has closed capacity on its network where it is no longer required and has put recent congestion down to this week's redeployment of dial ports and school holiday demand.

ZDNet Australia has received complaints from users of the Dingo Blue dial-up network, who claim they have been receiving busy signals all day long -- in many situations since the start of the week.

-I know for a fact that services have been reduced at many POPs (points of presence) and staff have been told to say they don't have access to this information and report to customers that it's merely congestion due to holidays," one angry user, who wished to remain anonymous, told ZDNet Australia.

-If they're reducing services, especially to the point where users can't actually log on to the Internet all day long, I would have thought they would be obligated to tell the truth."

However, Dingo Blue steadfastly denies it has cut available incoming modem lines on a large number of dial-up POPs as part of cost-cutting measures which follow hot on the heels of its recent major restructure which saw up to 25 staff shown the door. The Internet Service Provider sustains that congestion this week is due to an ongoing rationalisation of excess capacity compounded with peak holiday traffic.

"We haven't cut the number of incoming lines," Dingo Blue's group manager, consumer products, Shane Martin told ZDNet Australia. -What we've done over the last couple of months is rationalise and redeploy port capacity across the entire network of 48 POPs."

Martin exemplified this by saying if there were 5000 ports in Melbourne and only 4000 being used and 5000 ports in Sydney where 5200 were needed, Dingo Blue would transfer some un-used ports from Melbourne to Sydney to meet customer demand.

Martin admitted that some capacity had been closed but it was where it was no longer required.

-It's like driving a car on a six-lane freeway in the middle of the night - we've just closed some lanes," Martin said. However, -At peak times some congestion will occur," he added. -As a dial IP provider we don't guarantee [Internet] access in peak periods."

Martin said the ISP will continue network rationalisation -as user requirements dictate".

In other news, Dingo Blue has now admitted that a segment of its customer base was affected by the mass email destruction that impacted OptusNet subscribers with usernames from A through to C, reported by ZDNet Australia earlier this week.

Dingo Blue uses Optus's dial-up network and at first denied its customers had been impacted by the email wipeout, but today said: "A segment of Dingo Blue's customer base has been affected due to technical difficulties experienced with our network provider's e-mail platform. Specifically, customers with user names beginning with the letters A through to C have experienced loss of e-mails sent and received prior to 1 October."

    In the recent 2 weeks, I have noticed that my connection is cut off very often after getting connected for a short while. Sometimes, right at the start of the connection, sometimes, after half an hour, some times, after an hour. And these disconnections happen all the time, not specifically in their so-called "busy time". I believe that it is their policy that the user may be disconnected after 1 hour of inactive log-on or after 12-hour continuous connection, which I fully understand. But the disconnection even happens when I am sitting in front of the computer surfing the net!!! My friends are also experiencing the same problem. I am not sure that this is caused by their port rationalisation in Melbourne or not. If so, if it still happens I believe I will have to consider switching to another ISP and so will my friends.

    Dingo Blue was once touted as being the inexpensive but high quality alternative to the mainstream. True, it's owned by Optusnet, but it claimed it's service would be cheaper and better. Comparisons with Bigpond and with its parent in terms of download speed, access capability and billing - through the use of a totally online system which at that time was unique - were it's flags of enticement. Now I note that Dingo Blue is not only "rationalising" its dialup services but also it's monthly charges are higher than it's parent company's (or at least appear to be). The connections appear to be haphazard, download speeds and in some cases connection baud rates have reduced (happening more and more frequently), and they claim this is only a temporary issue due to the combined effect of their rationalisation and the school holiday period.

    I for one am not prepared to put up with poor service, and I don't think the Australian public is gullible as to do so either. Dingo Blue you are on notice - either declare your agenda to your customers now, including the expected impacts of your rationalisation process and where these are likely to occur, or get the problem fixed so that no such problems occur. Like many other previously very satisfied customers, I am now very disillusioned as to what you call a satisfactory service, and my feet will do the walking for alternatives if your excuses don't hold water in 10 days time. That includes my preselected STD calls, thank you very much!

    To the first writer Waratt Rattasiri, check your settings, or have your settings checked by a DB staff member, you'd be surprised how much can stuff up in a PC.
    And to the second, Anonymous... you can't have believed that DB's network would be BETTER than optus, when they USE optus?
    As for cheaper... can we say one net?

    sounds like dingo is lieing again. where having the same problem up here in bundaberg qld and i got the same excuse. seems they like to take your money for a crap service.

    It's a pity, but it looks like Dingoblue, ( which up until this last week had always given us here in Perth thoroughly satisfactory service ), has gone the route of trying to pull the wool over our eyes, in the hope of us remaining loyal customers.
    To me, loyalty has to be earned. I've now had several evenings during which I have encountered busy signals ALL EVENING. In other I have been denied access for that whole time. This is totally unacceptable no matter what the reason, unless of course they've got a downed server or something, but even then it would not be acceptable except for one evening. I'll give them them a week and if the situation has not improved then I'm gone

    The Dingo might be on its last bark. Many people are fed up with the way they are treated by the Dingo Blue. It has even got worse since AGL hsd tsken over. The lack of information from the Dingo when changes occur, the waiting on line for extended periods when trying to resolve a problem only to here the recorded dribble that is played. In Darwin they must have reduced the resources a lot because you can dial for fifteen minutes to get connected sometimes. To dial in before there was never any wait.

    Even if they have reduced resources they must have gone overboard if you have to try that many times to log on. As more users leave because of poor service the Dingo will reduce further resources because they aren't being used and then more staff because the needs will be less and eventually the Dingo will die in its own trap.

    Denial of reduced service is a ploy to get people to stay. Can't blame them for that. But the fact remains that NEVER since dingoblue has been in existence has there been the level of busy signals at regional POPs as there are now. Yes, its probably to do with school holidays, but school holidays have never affected it before. Ergo, Regional POPs have a reduced capacity. Sydney and Melbourne are largely unaffected, probably because "redeployment" has probably occurred in their favour...

    Yes I along with many others have had problems connecting. Have tried for long periods of time to connect and get the "engaged" signal... NOT HAPPY DINGOBLUE !!!!

    We havn't been able to connect for almost a week now. the drop outs and busy signals are always happening. alone today it took us 3 hrs to connect. me my brother and father are all taking shifts dialing in. one thing is for sure they have lost our buisness

    Dingoblue is simply not being truthful in this matter. I rang Dingo during the week as I was getting busy signals all the time and have to be on the Internet by 6.30pm each evening. I was told they had closed many ports here in Perth and due to school holidays, this problem would be rectified, and was even given Eastern States phone no, but was advised to connect after 7pm as this was the cheaper rate re phone line.also Dingo think about staying available later for us here in the West, when you get daylight saving, it is going to be worse.

    i would like to say to the dingo blue people to get there act together , people using dingo blue as there isp ( like myself )deserve oniesty and not recorded messages as we are getting ,we work hard for the money we earn to pay for our isp account and it shouldnt be unreliable like it is .

    You people should get a life. Dialup access is always unreliable. If you're unhappy with Dingo blue's services, then find another ISP. It's not like there aren't a thousand better ones out there. And yes, I'm afraid, you're going to have to pay a little bit more. That's life. If you want a RELIABLE internet connection, throw out your modem, move in next door to your exchange and get DSL.
