Did downloads quash Idol single sales?

Lower-than-expected sales for the single from this year's Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan may be due to fans preferring to pay for downloads of the track.

While Donovan's single Listen To Your Heart debuted at number one on this week's ARIA chart, it sold far fewer copies than last year's winner Guy Sebastian. According to music news site Undercover, Donovan's single sold 35,817 copies in its first week, while Sebastian's Angels Brought Me Here sold 128,679 -- more than three times as many. Last year's runner-up Shannon Noll also sold close to 100,000 copies of his first single What About Me? in its opening week.

Anticipating larger sales, Donovan's label Sony BMG has reportedly shipped more than 210,000 copies of the single to retailers. However, the single hit the shelves more than a week after Telstra's BigPond Music site began offering legal downloads of the track.

Those downloads don't count towards Donovan's chart position, but may have undermined sales of the single. A Telstra spokesperson declined to cite specific download numbers for the track, citing commercial confidentiality. However, the track was "far and away the biggest every legal song download in Australia, by several-fold, and it attracted record traffic to www.bigpondmusic.com," the spokesperson said.

Online activity has proved a decidedly mixed blessing for the Idol franchise. Last month, Telstra was forced to apologise after it inadvertently published the incorrect address for Donovan's site in a congratulatory advertisement, instead directing fans to a site promoting pornographic videos.

Maybe its just bad, fabricated music. God forbid a record label should take responsibility or even admit to a sub-standard product.

Sorry,I am sad to say it was not the downloads that quash Caseys single, the truth of the matter is-"too fat and not good looking".

I believe the above should not be an issue if one has the voice, but in this world of pop idolism its a fact.Unless of course you have a unique voice which Casey has not.I expect she will soon fade away.

Um maybe not as many people care ... eg the big brother fad.. Drawn out to many weeks.
I did not watch one single minute of the show. Why? because I am sick of reality shows. How much extra ratings did fraser get?? thats what I would like to know.

It seems I am not the only one....I was unfortunate enough to catch about 15 minutes of idol in the past three years.

I really do not think the whole 'downloads quash Idol single sales' argument is really valid. The music is basically the same as everything else out there being played endlessly on commercial radio and television. Why would you want to pay for the crap? You can get it for free on Radio.

With the majority of idol\bb\etc. viewere attention spans not lasting beyond the next commerical break, I am surprised that the CD sold at all.

Perhaps it is being bought by deluded parents for Christmas stocking fillers for their mobile phone equipped, internet savvy children, who after racking up thousands of dollars in premium SMS charges are squaking for something new.

Is this an Ad for Bigpond? Slow sales for this number is not due to the success of telstra.

The song is a crappy remake and Casey looks like shes holding the mike like a drumstick. Maybe she can find her calling in fatagrams. She's not my idol

I predicted this would happen early on during the idol finals when I saw how the judges raved about Casey's performances when they were always average at best.

The judges comments have a huge influence over the voting results. I could see from their gushing adoration of her, which had more to do with their backing the underdog than actual talent, that she might end up winning the whole thing. However I could also see that she was not a performer who could have any staying power after her idol limelight had faded. I predicted exactly this: that she would win, but her album sales would be a big letdown.

I don't hold it against her that she is fat and ugly. So is Courtney and he would have made a good idol. What I do hold against her is her voice sounds painful and harsh when she goes for her big notes, and that she is a messy slob, at least according to all the other idol contestants when asked what they would most remember about her.

Hopefully next time the judges will remember this and plumb for talent over feel-good politically correctness.

Casey's a good singer but Guy Sebastian is a phenomenon. We're lucky that a vocalist of Guy's calibre is around in our life time. There will never be another Idol winner as good as Guy.

Downloads had nothing to do with it because very little people download from it! Telstras music download site is useless, there music wont even play on the worlds best and most popular music player, the Apple iPOD!
