Did Telstra ask for clean-up volunteers?

update Telstra's main union has accused the telco of asking for "volunteers" to help clean up its telephone exchanges on a Saturday, with a BBQ lunch to be supplied and family invited.

A statement posted by the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) on its site claimed that Telstra network executive Michael Rocca — who was yesterday promoted to acting chief operations officer — had sent a letter and an SMS message to staff requesting volunteers for the clean-up effort.

The union claimed the SMS message was as follows:

Volunteers are sort [sic] for a cleanup exchange day, 5 December a Saturday morning. Exchanges to be cleaned are yet to be nominated, BBQ for lunch supplied. Family members are also invited. If interested call/SMS me by 10AM this Friday.

A spokesperson for Telstra said the workers would be paid overtime for the Saturday work, which is part of the telco's so-called Exchange Maintenance Program, which will this weekend hit over 200 telephone exchanges. Eventually the telco hopes to get to over 5,000.

"The maintenance will involve mowing lawns, painting walls, removing graffiti and conducting other general repairs in community-based exchanges," said the spokesperson.

CEPU branch secretary Len Cooper had earlier said in the union's statement that the telco's request was ridiculous, although it was not clear whether the union was aware that the workers would be paid overtime for volunteering.

"Members are outraged and it's making management laughing stock," Victorian branch secretary Len Cooper told ZDNet.com.au. "It's particularly bad at a time when management is in conflict over the pay rise they're offering and want [workers] to accept. People are pretty outraged."

Cooper said Rocca had not responded to the union's call to not volunteer and advised Telstra staff to "tell management to forget it".

"This is the Telstra equivalent of funding the armed forces through cake stalls and charity tea parties, isn't it? This has got to be an early April fool's joke?" he asked.

"Pay for work done out of Telstra's near record profits and this time get it done properly and regularly, and then you won't have a problem," he said.

The union accusation comes as the CEPU has recently revealed plans to re-commence industrial action within Telstra tomorrow, as part of a protracted struggle with the telco which has gone on for more than a year. The union is expecting 10,000 CEPU members Australia-wide to strike tomorrow, said Cooper.

"Undoubtedly there will be interruptions to Telstra customers — because it will be the people that do maintenance on IP networks for corporate clients, intra- and inter-state transmission links and EFTPOS networks."

I use to remember the days when you could eat your breakfast off the Exchange Floors!

And the "Mungoes" would get upset if you even ate any food insight of the Exchange!

Yep, I remember those days too! I worked in the Divisional Engineer's Office and we had a cleaning lady who was an absolute legend. The whole office sparkled, every day. 40 years later I no longer work for Telstra but the offices I have worked in over the last umpteen years are an absolute disgrace. There is a lot to be said for bringing back inhouse cleaners. They cost far less than useless contractors in the end. Also worked in several exchanges and yes, they were spotlessly clean at all times, especially the floors.

Volunteers it is Fed up Telstra employee -- 01/12/09

I work for the Network Construction(NC) section of Telstra Network Services(TNS), our section has been asked for volunteers whilst another section which does faults and local work are going to be paid overtime.

Why should one section be paid whilst another is being asked to give up a Saturday to do the things Telstra should be getting their contractor(Sentinar) to do.

They can't even maintain the air conditioners or lighting inside the exchanges to an acceptable standard.

Another thing if I volunteer(unlikely) would I be covered if myself or my family happen to get injured.

It should also be pointed out that Telstra just recently cut $50 million from their exchange maintenance budget.

Part of their graffiti policy is that they will only remove it if it is offensive.

All I can say is will Mick Rocca and Phil Sporton be out on Saturday the 5th December painting over graffiti at their local exchange for free. Now that I would like to see!!!!!

Me a volunteer, forget it ? Anonymous -- 02/12/09 (in reply to #320393207)

My God, who'd want you as a worker, either paid or voluntary. You sound like you would not lift an unpaid finger even in a dire emergency, without bleating to the union for all sorts of compensation.

So would you volunteer your time to come in and clean up your workplace if you knew that your managemnet was paying millions of dollars to a contracting company to do the maintenance you are expected to do for free on a Saturday. You know the day that is part of the weekend.

    Obviously a management stooge.

Yes I would be very happy to do it............! Anonymous -- 02/12/09 (in reply to #320393309)

You are obviously a Union stooge, who doesn't need any extra money, and is happily being paid for doing nothing.

If you read the post of Fed up Telstra employee, they say they work for one section of Telstra and they have been told they will not be getting paid whilst another section is going to be.

Telstra is a large company and I am sure that the spokesperson does not have the ability to speak for all sections.

    Learn to read, fool!

MAYBE Telstra could've asked for volunteers from NON-Telstra employees in return for a free lunch.

Or even better get the 'work for the dole' people to do it. The might learn a trade.

Cleanup exchange day...hah Another fed up Telstra employee -- 03/12/09 (in reply to #320393207)

I'm with this bloke...I also work for the big T.
It is obvious the public are not fully aware of Telstra's treatment of their staff and contractors otherwise they would understand the implications of this request.

I found a video on vimeo telling their lies...http://vimeo.com/7957529

    Shows their true colours.

It appears they are trying to have us believe they have every intention of maintaining the network but in reality they are telling their contractors quite the opposite.

    A bit of light education.

Was Volunteer work. Thanks to union, now paid owrk. Anonymous -- 04/12/09

This work was initially on a volunteer basis. Thanks to union intervention it is now going to be paid work for the employee. All the wife and kids will get is a free sausage sandwich and I am not sure what will happen if they injure themself helping.

Anyway, there is now a strike over the weekend so maybe no one will show up.

re Was Volunteer work. Thanks to union, now paid owrk. Anonymous -- 06/12/09 (in reply to #320393514)

That's a typical reply, from a typical union stooge. Nothing changes when typical union stooges are involved.

Another stooge! Davo -- 08/12/09 (in reply to #320393749)

Anyone who stands up for themselves is a union stooge. What is important is looking after your executives who have to make the hard decisions like where to invest their millions. Don't selfishly look out for your own interests, do what your boss tells you and be glad have the opportunity to make him rich. Be a corporate stooge and enjoy the taste of sycophant.

re re Was Volunteer work. Thanks to union, now paid work Anonymous -- 08/12/09 (in reply to #320393749)

Ah, but it did change! Why, do you think it changed? Because management got it wrong and wanted to correct another incorrect decision? You are so na¯ve.

    cleanup needed! Anonymous -- 07/12/09

Perhaps a higher priority would be cleaning up the disgraceful cabling in exchanges, the woeful state of their asset databases and most of all the short sighted, low-IQ management that has resulted in what is arguably the worst run company in the country. If Telstra had to compete like any other telco they would have gone under years ago.

change of attitude needed! Anonymous -- 08/12/09 (in reply to #320393855)

If Telstra could rid itself of those within their company, that continually whinge and complain about their management (good or bad) and simply did their best to get on with the job at hand, then an all round better future could be enjoyed by all, going forward. Unfortunately too many of those currently employed by Telstra are beyond redemption.

    Union Stooge???? Anonymous -- 08/12/09

Tell me, why does one get labelled a 'Union Stooge" for defending their rights/choices as an employee? Good lord, what utter naivety and ignorance. I am sure your forefathers who fought nail and tooth for our rights in the workplace must be so PROUD of you - NOT. No wonder you are 'anonymous'!!!

What an idiotic comment from an anonymous poster bagging another with... "No wonder you are 'anonymous'!!!

Which was preceded by an equally brilliant comment such as "Your forefathers who fought nail and tooth for our rights in the workplace must be so PROUD of you - NOT." That surely wins the prize for the dumbest contribution to this site, for 2009 !!!

Ah Anonymous -- 08/12/09 (in reply to #320393978)

Both comments you mention under the heading *You are definitely a Union Stooge*, were made by the anti unionist, Sydney Mike!

The first sentence was a quote from the unionist, copied by the anti unionist.

The other two quotes you mock, came from your mate, the anti unionist who you have mistaken as the unionist.

This makes his anti union comments now the second stupidest comments of the year, by a country mile, behind your stupid anti union comments.

Telstra cleanup day John Collins -- 08/12/09

I've been a Telstra employee for 30 years now. While it's great that Phil Sporton, regional team managers and other volunteers gave up their time on Saturday to clean up some Telstra sites, it really does beg the question - why have the sites been allowed to degenerate to such levels of neglect. Of course the answer is obvious. In it's zeal to "take costs out of the business" management have outsourced building management to a contractor (Sentinar) then proceeded to slash their budgets to the point where cleaning, painting, lighting and general building maintenance issues are virtually non-existant. No doubt these managers have received performance bonuses for their cost cutting initiatives. So, here we have a top 10 company having to ask for volunteers and the community to clean up their own mess...........?
