Compaq has released a fix to help victims of rogue versions of the Pocket PC 2002 operating system circulating on the Web. The fix, available on the Compaq Web site , allows users to remove the software from iPaq PDAs.
Analyst firm Giga warned users this week they could lose data if they download and install rogue versions of the new operating system. Giga's clients had reported that attempts to upgrade existing Compaq iPaq Pocket PC devices to Pocket PC 2002 led to lost data and applications when the ROM image installation completed.
Giga analyst Ken Smiley said, "While none of these (images) has proven to be Trojan horses, the possibility for a serious security breach through a compromised Flash ROM upgrade remains."
The official Pocket PC 2002 upgrade is only available via CD, from Monday.
