Everybody who actually understands the communications sector in Australia thinks this is a good idea. The smarter shareholders understand that this move, while carrying a degree of risk, will actually be better for Telstra's value long term.
The Libs are just trying to make political gain from the thousands of worried Mum and Dad shareholds, to whom they originally (and foolishly) sold shares.

Telstra should never have been sold as a whole company. It was and still is an Australian citizen funded monopoly that should be broken up and the infrastructure kept in the public’s control.
There is no way any other global communications company could afford to build a network like Telstra’s with our population on such a large land mass.
