Broadband over powerlines: Regulator weighs in

Australia's communications regulator has set up a broadband over powerline (BPL) information portal as it considers what rules must govern the delivery of telecommunications services using electrical power wiring.

The Australian Communications Authority said the portal would provide background information on BPL technology and interim arrangements for trialling it in Australia, as well as details of trials that are already underway.

The ACA has already established regulatory guidelines for the testing of BPL technology.

"The challenge for the ACA is to set regulatory arrangements that do not unnecessarily inhibit the adoption of BPL technology but at the same time protect radiocommunications services from harmful interference," ACA acting chairman Dr Bob Horton said.

A discussion paper is due for release in early April.

"Australia is keeping pace with international deployment of BPL technology. Government regulators in the European Union, United States and other countries have either prepared, or are preparing, regulatory frameworks to accommodate in-house and access BPL technologies," Dr Horton said.

Broadband technology in Austra ...Anonymous -- 24/01/05

Broadband technology in Australia is way too expensive compared to other countries, particular North America.

My relatives in Canada and the US are paying 40 dollars per month for DSL connections of 3-4mega bit download, with unlimited download data.

In Australia, 1.5mega bit connections are retailing for 60-90 dollars, mostly with download limits. Broadband needs to be come more cheaper for consumers to enjoy the benefits of high speed internet.

I sure hope Dr.Horton doesn't over regulate BOP. We have enough regulation which protects Tel$tra now without increasing the barriers which may make it more difficult for others to compete with our "WUNDERFULL" phone company. We need cheaper Broadband & BOP is a way to do it.

So, we can all trash the expensive, purpose built high speed networks everywhere, huh...
Why didn't they tell us years ago that you can stuff gigabits by the bucketload down the powerlines and light up the world with internet access EVERYWHERE..

    Gimme a break!
