The Australian domain name administrator, auDA, said Brantwebb.com.au and toddrussell.com.au were registered on Tuesday night, the same day the two men were rescued after being trapped underground for 14 days.
AuDA became aware of the registrations at 9am yesterday morning, according to auDA chief executive officer Chris Disspain.
"Our immediate reaction was that it was more likely to be an attempt by the registrant to 'cash in' on the news story," he said.
AuDA had asked the sites' registrant to explain his/her reasons for registering the names, but no satisfactory explanation had been received within 24 hours. AuDA had then deleted the names, said Disspain.
Domains in the com.au and net.au space must reflect the registered name of the business or trademark concerned or be "closely and substantially connected" with activities of the business.
