US-based telecommunications company Bandspeed (www.bandspeed.com) has opened a R&D centre in Melbourne that will focus on providing high-performance chipsets for wireline and multiple wireless technologies, enabling faster and more reliable Internet access over existing networks.
The company will invest AU$10.5 million in the centre over the next two years, and expects staff numbers to double from the current 20 within 12 months.
Opening the centre, State and Regional Development Minister John Brumby said Bandspeed could have chosen several other locations in the world in which to establish its R&D centre but settled on Melbourne because of access to world-class skills.
One of Bandspeed's founders, Stan Skafidas, was born in Melbourne.

50 million down the drain because skafidas technology sucked, CEO fired by VC and Skafidas runs back to Austraila.
