Australian University enters digital age

Griffith University, one of Australia's largest with about 25,000 students, has awarded an AU$2.5 million contract to telecoms provider AAPT for the rollout of a new voice network and associated services.

The three-year contract involves connecting Griffith's five campuses, spread over Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast, to AAPT's national fibre backbone network. The communications system at Griffith University is centralised, with one location servicing the five campuses.

-The greatest benefits will be access to digital technology, and cheaper costs," Naveen Sharma, assistant director of information and communication services at Griffith University told ZDNet Australia. -It will also assist in terms of business continuity and disaster recovery processes."

The contract involves upgrading from a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). It will provide more functionality, greater benefits and better management of its voice services, and support approximately 5,500 users.

"AAPT operates one of Australia's most extensive and technologically advanced voice networks, reaching approximately 98 percent of the Australian population," Graham Mitchell, AAPT's group general manager of business & Internet services said in a statement. "This enables us to offer our customers a range of innovative services at very competitive rates, which can be packaged according to customers' individual needs," he added.
