Atheist sites suffer wrath of DDoS

The websites of the Atheist Foundation of Australia and the Global Atheist Convention were knocked offline yesterday due to a sustained distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

At the time of writing the Atheist Foundation's site was still null routed with the Global Atheist Convention site saying that it does not have enough information to confirm the source or reason for the attacks. The site has also called the attacks "not just an attack on atheism, but an attack on freedom of speech".

As reported at scienceblogs.com, AFA president David Nicholls said that "the Atheist Foundation of Australia supports freedom of thought, and that includes freedom of religion. Our aim is to keep the Australian government, education and welfare systems secular. Unfortunately, some people in our society find that very confronting."

The Atheist Foundation's Facebook page pointed to an Atheist Nexus discussion which states that sites are expected to return sometime today. The discussion also says that the attack on the sites ramped up from 500Mbps to 1Gbps and "took out most of the datacentre and Optus upstream was effected".

Some people don't like any point of view apart from their own.

Attacks like this only make the two groups hate each other more. Why can't we just love each other for who we are? No man has any right to judge another's personal choice, either way.

I guess it's about time we updated the pantheon with some up to date deities.

I quite like the idea of DDoS the God of Available Bandwidth.

    ...BSoD the God of Windows.

    ...iMac the God of Smugness.

...Lunicks the God nobody takes seriously.

It's about all you can expect from those unfortunate enough to have contracted religious delusions. We should be treating religion for the mental illness that it is. You cannot expect deluded people to act rationally.

WTF? Anonymous -- 23/10/09 (in reply to #320389247)

Umm Simon, I suffer from two mental illnesses, so please don't compare medical illnesses to a lifestyle choice. Just shut the f**k up and let every person live their own life.

The devil made them do it... Anonymous -- 23/10/09

I love how they used the "tools of the devil" (ie. computers) to bring down the site... I guess science isn't so bad after all, just depends on how you can exploit it for your own political agenda ay? Oh the irony of religion... BTW, @Arg! : Religion breeds nothing but hatred & intolerance of anything that's not in line with their way of thinking. That goes for all religion (except maybe Buddhists). If people wanna believe something then fine, but don't be a douche bag over it & crush the rights to freedom of speech that we all supposedly have, by forcing your own warped view on the world down our throats - I'm looking at you right wing christians & islamists: the biggest hypocrites on the planet.

Hmm Anonymous -- 24/10/09 (in reply to #320389408)

That's right, no Christian has a computer for that very reason. Thank goodness paper isn't of the devil lest we have no biblical resources.
