Another Optus fibre break hits Qld

update Queensland-based customers of Optus and several other telcos were suffering service outages this afternoon due to what the SingTel subsidiary suspected was a break in an optical fibre cable north of Coffs Harbour.

iiNet, which uses Optus backhaul carriage in some areas, listed a "major" fault affecting the state this afternoon, and customers of mobile carriers such as 3 Mobile were also complaining of service outages online.

An Optus spokesperson confirmed the company was investigating a suspected fibre break, which they said was affecting 3G mobile data services in rural areas in Queensland, but not voice calling or SMS messages. Brisbane and the Gold Coast were unaffected, they said.

"Optus apologises for the inconvenience," the spokesperson said, noting technicians were on their way to the site and that the problem was expected to be fixed by 6:00pm, Sydney time.

Later this afternoon the Optus spokesperson said Optus 3G services had been restored at 2:35pm.

The outage adds to other issues Optus suffered in Queensland last year; in July the state lost internet, voice and mobile services due to pipe-laying contractors cutting a cable at Molendinar, west of Surfers Paradise.

The cut occurred as the inland route at Stanthorpe, through which traffic normally would have been re-routed, was down due to a hardware fault. At the time it incurred the wrath of state premier Anna Bligh.

    Gold Coast IS affected!
We cannot dial out on 3 Mobile!!

Poor Research. From what I can tell most of Queensland is affected, including Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Mobiles are affected as well Anonymous -- 17/02/09

I'm with 3 and my mobile is unable to send/receive SMS or calls, and my mobile broadband is also out. This is in central Brisbane. So saying that voice and SMS are unaffected is plainly not true.

I have no service at all Sam -- 17/02/09

I agree. I am in Brisbane and I have nothing at all. No SMS, no calls...... nothing......

Gold Coast affected by 3 Outage - Confirmed by 3 Anonymous -- 17/02/09

My 3 Mobile service has been unavailable since at least 10:40am until 2:30pm (it was possibly down a lot earlier).

I eventually contacted 3 using the telstra network to call their assistance number and was told, (Quote 3 services to the Gold Coast had been down and were restored around 2:30pm Unquote)

Brisbane Businesses are affected Anonymous -- 17/02/09

We lost all internet conectivity, and then it has been up and down for last hour. PBX (which is IP based) kept rebooting everytime it thought the link had changed.

Been out all day on three mobile phone, all services... Just checked then and it's working again. So the 2:30pm thing must have been correct

At 9am I tried to make several phone calls however wasn't having any luck. Internet wasn't working either, however after manually forcing my phone to GSM mode I was able to use all services as normal (although slower).

Fortunately my Optus mobile is the only service I have with Optus :)

Coolangatta/Gold coast is still affected Anonymous -- 17/02/09

Three has been out since around 10am

The same thing has happened to Telstra before Sydney and on the occasion it happened to Telstra it was their own doing and not an external issue.

This not newsworthy? Terry -- 18/02/09

If this fibre break was another affecting Queensland as a whole (as some comments have stated) why after a quick scan can I find no other news sites reporting on it?

And the 3 mobile outage is covered over here on Whirlpool .. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1145160 .. a quick look at that shows the Optus cable break may be related but 3 and Optus are separate companies, customers of 3 should be questioning them on the outage as it's their services that appeared to be primarily affected.

re OPTUS Outage Anonymous -- 19/02/09 (in reply to #320123520)

Great!! Just when you need a reliable service OPTUS network falls over again.........

miss my point Terry -- 20/02/09 (in reply to #320123642)

I think you guys missed my point. Yes, there was a cable break, no it didn't affect the whole of Queensland, and I'd be willing to bet some of the comments here dealing with an outage on 3 probably aren't even related to the cable break.

And then of course there is also the mass news articles on this outage, which seem to be so non-existant either the outage was small enough not to register as important enough by other news carriers or for some reason ZDNet got an exclusive.
