Amcom nabs People Telecom's Perth fibre

in brief Western Australia-based Amcom has purchased the Perth fibre business of People Telecom, in a transaction worth some AU$6.25 million.

The move puts paid to speculation about further consolidation of the Australian telecommunications industry raised after both telcos temporarily halted trading late last Friday.

The acquired assets include a client base using fibre and DSL-based broadband services and a large datacentre facility with some 600 square metres of space. Amcom itself already has significant numbers of customers in Perth using its own fibre and broadband services.

"We see this as a strategic whole of business acquisition, consolidating our position in the Perth corporate data market," Amcom's chief operating officer and CEO heir designate Clive Stein said in a statement this afternoon. Stein was not immediately available to comment on implications for Amcom's acquired customer base.

Now if they can nab anyone that is capable of providing decent customer service then they might be onto a winner. They have to have some of the worst customer service in the business. even their sales people can't be bothered getting back to customers for new deals (business not ADSL)!

I cannot tell you how poor the service provision has been for me. The link is slow and packet loss widespread. I sent in a tracert showing where the loss was occuring and got nothing back.

I called the customer technical support line and described the problem, I was told to call back the next day as the real technician had gone home and the person I was speaking to was only able to answer general enquiries.

My contract is up in April and I have every intention of moving away from people telecom.

I think the buy out has come too late to stop me from moving but if they can at least sort out the poor connection it would go a long way - then we would not have to call incompetent help staff.
