ACCC takes free ISP to court

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has begun proceedings in the Federal Court against ISP Free2aiR.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) alleges that Free2aiR, which went into receivership on April 15, engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct in telling its customers that its services included free Internet access time, and that there were no ongoing fees and charges other than for excess downloads. The director of Free2aiR, James Young, has been included in the proceedings.

The ACCC has also alleged that in addition to the one-off -set-up fee" advertised, Free2aiR also charged a quarterly access fee of AU$27.50, which was not brought to the attention of customers prior to the customer subscribing to the services.

Internet access for Free2aiR customers has been taken over by itConnect, a subsidiary of wholesale supplier Telenet which provided bandwidth to Free2aiR, until customers can find an alternative ISP.
