ACCC extends mobile monitoring

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will extend its regulation of the mobile telecoms playing field to include CDMA, as CDMA networks were not in use when the current regulatory regime was introduced.

-As with GSM mobile services, the ACCC believes that the limited competitive forces on the wholesale CDMA service, and the ability of integrated mobile carriers to restrict price competition in the downstream market for fixed-to-mobile calls, are of concern," ACCC chairman Professor Allan Fels said in a statement.

-Varying the GSM declaration to include CDMA services is likely to bring benefits by reducing opportunities for anti-competitive pricing as well as encouraging lower fixed-to-mobile call prices," he added.

The ACCC has previously stated that it will review the broader regulation of mobile services in 2003. This decision does not impact on that broader review.
