AAPT to outsource network to Alcatel

AAPT and Alcatel have signed a five-year AU$53 million outsourcing agreement that will see Alcatel take increased responsibility for the telecommunications company's network design and operations services.

The agreement is part of a AU$157 million wider deal previously signed by Telecom New Zealand -- the owners of AAPT -- and Alcatel, and will see approximately 100 AAPT staff transfer to Alcatel Australian and 200 Telecom New Zealand staff transfer to Alcatel New Zealand from 1 July, 2003.

Rhoda Holmes, AAPT general manager for Customer and Network Services said the deal would help future-proof the development and operation of AAPT's national voice and data network.

"Under the agreement, we will be adopting a unique operating model that will enable AAPT to leverage the expertise, technology and operational scale of a global player. This in turn means our customers will benefit from faster, easier access to many more cutting-edge products and services," said Holmes.

Alcatel Australia Chief Executive Officer Ross Fowler described the deal as a "significant milestone for Alcatel".

"This new team, with the benefit of Alcatel global business resources, will extend the current skill base of Alcatel's growing Services business to design, operate and support AAPT's current and new network," he said.
