3 Australia doubles down on data

3 Mobile today announced substantial increases in the data allowances included in its X-Series data plans, plus new high-end mobile broadband data plans.

Customers paying AU$20, AU$30 or AU$40 per month for mobile data to their mobile handsets will now be allocated 1GB, 2GB and 3GB respectively on the X-series plans, as will new customers signing on to these services.

X-Series plans also include a range of data-free services through 3's Plant 3 Web portal and 4,000 minutes of Skype voice calling with compatible handsets.

3 Mobile also announced new high-use data allowances for customers using 3's USB broadband modem. Customers will now have 6GB and 7GB plan options costing AU$39 and AU$49 per month on a 24-month contract.

3 Australia made headlines recently when it called out for its customers to help petition Apple to sell the iPhone 3G on the Hutchinson 3 network. Without the iPhone officially sold by the network it is widely speculated that many Australian iPhone customers are buying the popular handset, unlocking it, and bringing their business to 3.

    No iPhone ???...booooring ! Anonymous -- 29/07/08

I switched from 3 to Optus just for the iPhone.
I would have stayed but hey, they didn't have the phone I wanted.
I just don't care about extra data, and neither will anyone else...we all want iPhones !!!!
    Yay iPhone !!

Huge bills Anonymous -- 29/07/08 (in reply to #320107946)

So you'd rather have huge bills the reasonably priced ones? I think Australia must have the most telecommunication companies offering the iPhone yet we still have pathetic plans compared to other countries. And on another note why do the telcos say pay $x dollars receive $x dollars worth of calls? Every other country quotes minutes. Which to me makes more sense. The $x included is deceptive.

Iphone Overhyped and exensive for the media brainwashed. Anonymous -- 22/08/08

The iphone is overrated and expensive like all apple hardware in this country..... if you get it from the US , no warranty and risk bricking it to make it work on a local network..... No bluetooth etc and it is as large as the 2 year old nokia e61. The new small and slim nokia e71 or even the n95 can do most of what the iphone can do but much cheaper and with a warranty.. Some people love to be brainwashed by hype..... Look at CNET AU reviews on smartphones. Overall the Nokia e71 came first at 91% and the Iphone 2nd at 81%. Iphone only bested the nokia on touchscreen and ease of use. Apart from that the nokia kicks the overhyped iphones butt!

Have you actually tried using an iPhone? Anonymous -- 22/08/08 (in reply to #320110283)

Well I have.. prior to my iPhone I had a HTC TyTn II (still retails for almost $1000), the old version of the Nokia N95 and an XDA Atom. While on paper some of these phones (the TyTn II in particular) may appear comparible to the iPhone it's when you use the iPhone for a couple of days that you quickly learn from a functional perspective it is one of the most advanced mobile devices ever created.

Personally I've never been a Steve Jobs or Mac fan; but the iPhone has won me over. Browsing the internet, watching movies, locating and installing applications has never been so easy and there is no handset out there that even comes close to competiting at this stage. Windows Mobile Phones in my experience are still extremely clunky in their performance and complex to use.

There are a number of minor shortcomings with the iPhone such as a hopeless camera and less than ideal battery life, but never before have I found anything which comes as close to being a desktop replacement when I'm out and about than the iPhone.

This is not to say I'm an iPhone devotee through and through, but if another manufacturer brings out something better (which I have no doubt they eventually will) we still have to give the iPhone credit for really shaking up this market.

Even from a mobile phone plan perspective look at what you can get now. A few months ago carriers would have laughed at you if you wanted a 200MB download allowance. Now you can get 500MB, 1-5GB on your mobile plan with some service providers for under $100.
