Telstra upgrades Next G uplink speed

in brief Telstra today announced it had upgraded the upload speed of portions of its Next G mobile network to a theoretical 5.8Mbps, with real-world speeds likely to sit between 300Kbps and 3Mbps.

A Telstra spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, but the telco's network appeared to be previously capable of upload speeds of between 300Kbps and 1Mbps.

Next G will remain limited to those speeds when users are outside upgraded areas; capital cities, metropolitan areas and selected regional locations. Customers with Telstra Turbo 21 modems can access the faster upload speeds by upgrading them via a software tool (available online) from the product's manufacturer Sierra Wireless. Other enhanced upload speed devices would be available in the near future, Telstra said.

The Next G network is capable of theoretical download speeds of up to 21Mbps, with real-world speeds ranging from 550Kbps to 8Mbps.
