in brief The Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE in Victoria will upgrade some of its training facilities to prepare students for jobs helping to construct the $43 billion National Broadband Network, the Federal Government announced today.

The TAFE will receive $16.15 million from the recent budget to upgrade its existing telecommunications, gas and electricity training yard at its Chadstone campus, build three new technology training classrooms, and construct a new fibre-optic training room, according to a statement issued by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's office this afternoon.

The statement said the TAFE was one of a few institutions which specialised in telecommunications and energy sector training facilities. The funding comes from the $934 million round two package of the Education Investment Fund, and is one of a number of facilities that will receive similar NBN training.

The TAFE itself will also throw a further $3 million into the project.
